Protect Your View
Western window and door systems are engineered for high performance with minimal upkeep. Regular maintenance will help preserve the beauty and effortless operation for years to come.
The information below provides a summary of best practices. For comprehensive information on how to clean and maintain your Western window and door systems, and potential weather-related conditions such as condensation and thermal expansion, please review the downloadable maintenance guides below.
Maintenance Best Practices
Follow these guidelines to maintain optimal appearance and performance of your window and door systems.
General Cleaning
- Wash products with a soft cloth, mild cleaner, and light pressure; rinse gently
- For best results, clean glass during cooler temperatures, without direct sunlight
- Clean and rinse each window or door individually; do not allow cleaning agents to sit for long periods
- Routinely inspect moving parts and water drainage (weep systems)
Clean tracks and sills with a damp cloth or vacuum
Important Precautions
Avoid the following:
- Excessive scrubbing
- Metal tools, such as razor blades, putty knives
- Harsh cleaners, caustic solvents and corrosive chemicals
- Garden hose or pressure washer
- Leaning on screens - They are not designed to prevent falling
Cleaning Schedule
The recommended cleaning frequency depends on your location and environmental factors.
For best results, thoroughly inspect and clean all windows, doors, screens, and frames once a year. Clean hardware components twice a year. In coastal areas (or other areas of extreme weather) monthly cleaning is recommended.
After Installation
Thoughtful care during and after the installation process is important.
- Protect windows from construction debris to avoid damage
- Clean aluminum frames to prevent corrosion from exposure to construction site chemicals
- Remove labels from glass If needed, soak with soapy water and gently scrape with a plastic putty knife
- Follow all other recommendations as indicated.
Cleaning Instructions
Follow these guidelines for cleaning each component of your windows and doors to maintain optimal appearance and operation over time.
Glass
- Rinse glass with clean water to wash away loose dust and prevent scratching.
- Clean using a soft cloth, pre-mixed glass cleaner, or a mixture of baby shampoo and water (1 tsp shampoo to 1 gallon of water).
- Don’t let cleaning solutions puddle at the edges of the glass.
For best results, wash glass during cooler temperatures and out of direct sunlight.
Frames
- Clean frames using mild soap, water, and a sponge or soft cloth.
- Test your cleaning solution on a small, hidden area of the frame first.
- Remove debris (like bird droppings or coastal sand) as soon as possible with a damp cloth. (Using a dry cloth may scratch some finishes.)
Screens
- Carefully remove screens and lay them flat on a clean surface or lawn.
- Gently clean them with a soft-bristled brush, mild soap, and a light spray of water.
- Let them dry completely before putting them back.
Hardware & Tracks
- Keep door and window tracks clear of dust and debris by vacuuming or wiping them with a damp cloth.
- Use a light oil (like mineral, grapeseed, olive, or three-in-one oil) to lubricate hinges and thumb turns.
- Don’t lubricate the wheels of your sliding glass doors; they operate on sealed ball bearings.
